Analysis of Coal Blockage Causes in Power Plant Raw Coal Bunkers

Extensive field observations indicate that blockages in boiler raw coal bunkers predominantly occur within a 3-meter zone above the discharge outlet, typically spanning less than 2 meters in width. Ensuring smooth fuel flow requires effective mitigation of obstructions in this critical region. Detailed analysis reveals that coal bunker blockages in thermal power plants primarily result from three key factors:

1.Coal Composition Factors: Some power plants co-fire sludge with coal, and this complex fuel composition significantly increases the risk of clogging.

2.Bunker Structural Design Flaws: Non-standard bunker geometries (e.g., irregularly shaped bunkers) are more prone to blockages compared to conventional designs due to their unique structural characteristics.

3.Coal Flow Rate Mismatch: The gravitational flow rate of coal inside the bunker often exceeds the feed rate of the downstream coal feeder.

Excess coal begins to compact at the feeder inlet and gradually propagates upward, eventually leading to complete bunker blockage. This occurs because the bunker and coal chute lack flow control capability, while the coal feeder adjusts its discharge rate to meet varying mill system demands. As a result, not all gravitationally discharged coal can be conveyed downstream, causing accumulation and compaction at the tail end of the feeder inlet chute. This process forms a "rat hole" (funnel flow pattern) until the bunker becomes fully obstructed.



Innovative Solution: Dual Rotary Blade Anti-Clogging System for Slide Gates

During routine operations in coal-fired power plants, material flow obstruction represents a persistent operational challenge. Coal blockages not only reduce unit load capacity but may also trigger flameout-induced trip events. To address this problem, the dual  rotary blade anti-clogging system for slide gates has been developed. With its high efficiency, leak-proof sealing, and thorough clogging resolution, it has become a reliable solution for ensuring smooth material flow.

The system employs an externally mounted geared motor to drive rotating blades. As the blades rotate relative to the bunker wall, they separate the coal flow from the wall surface while simultaneously agitating the bulk material. During this process, the rotating blades generate downward propulsion force, activating material flow in prone-to-clog zones. This mechanism eliminates coal-wall adhesion while creating downward disturbance, effectively destroying material bridging, arching, and blockages.

Operational experience shows that blockages in boiler raw coal bunkers primarily occur within 3 meters above the outlet and span less than 2 meters in width. Only by resolving clogs in this critical zone can uninterrupted fuel discharge be ensured.

Based on the third clogging cause analysis, maintaining continuous material flow in the slide gate-to-feeder inlet segment is essential for preventing bunker blockages. Our engineered solution implements:The section from the coal bunker outlet to the coal feeder is a key part of coal bunker anti-blocking. According to the analysis of the coal blocking causes in the third point above, we know that to ensure that the coal bunker is not blocked, the section from the shutter door to the inlet of the coal feeder must maintain a continuous flow state of materials. For this reason, within the range of 3 meters upward from the inlet of the coal feeder, we have designed a rotary blockage removal device with upper and lower scrapers for the shutter door + a pneumatic blowing blockage removal device for the upper coal bunker. The system runs automatically on a regular basis to activate the materials in the easily blocked section. The rotary blockage removal device with the lower scraper of the shutter door is mainly used to ensure that the bottleneck section from the coal bunker to the inlet of the coal feeder is not blocked. The upper scraper of the shutter door and the pneumatic blowing blockage removal device ensure that no agglomeration and blockage occur below a certain cross-sectional diameter of the coal bunker, so as to ensure that the upper coal bunker does not form an arch under the action of its own weight, and finally ensure that the coal bunker system is completely free of coal blockage.
